Apple Theme

As September comes to a close, we are also finishing up our apple theme. Here are a few of our activities:

The Last Day of Summer Fun

As we see summer out the door and welcome Fall, we took our Friday PE class outside to enjoy the glorious weather. The kids played soccer and bubbles and had some fun together.

Reading Assessments

Reading Assessments are complete and students have been put into reading groups. Reading groups will begin on Monday and during the week a small book will come home with your student. My hope is that you will read the book several times with your child until it is a comfortable read for them. I have started them off one level lower than they tested for a bit of an easy start. If you are interested in where your student tested out, feel free to send me an email.

Grade Two Diagnostic Spelling Tests

Grade Twos have finished their first Diagnostic spelling tests. I will send them home in their Planners. There is a score on the bottom and a “Grade Status.” The Grade Status will be a number with a decimal ex: 1.9. A 1.9 score means they scored in Grade One in the 9th month – May of Grade One. A 2.5 score means they scored January of Grade 2. If you would like help interpreting the score, feel free to let me know!

Spelling lists will start the first week of October.

Grade Two Writing Project

We finished our first Grade Two writing project today! It was tough for some and easy for others and was an excellent assessment for me as to where we are in our writing skills. I think that they are worth celebrating so I put them up in the hallway. Please pop in and take a look. If you want to chat with me about where we are and where we are going, feel fee to stop by!

Parking Lot Troubles

The school has asked me to post some guildelines to make the parking lot safer!

Parking Lot Information:

Please ensure that you always follow the procedures for parking lot safety while using the Highroad Academy parking lot.

1. Follow direction of flow as indicated by the arrows and signage.
2. Park ONLY in designated parking areas. Do not park in ‘No Parking’ zones including the Drop Off lane on the west side of the building.
3. Pull into a parking stall when dropping off and picking up students rather than stopping in the driving lane. Do not stop next to the pylons to drop off or pick up your students.
4. Do not drive alongside the overhang of the main school entrance, north side of the building.
5. Do not enter through the Chilliwack Central Entrance nest to the playing field. This is a Fire Lane, and the parking area is not available for HRA use.
6. Always be alert for children who may dart out between cars.

Toonies for Terry

Just a reminder that we will be doing our Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 20th. Students are invited to bring a toonie to school for a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. We will all be running together on the field outside.

Comfort Kits

Last year’s Comfort Kits were sent home this week. The students have a letter in their Planners to reference refreshing the kits and bringing them back to school. Please have all Comfort Kits back to school by October 6th.

Phonogram Assessment

Phonogram Assessments are now complete. All new students, as well as Grade 2s who need extra support, will be getting extra practice with our Learning Assistance teacher Mrs. Wilson.

Reading Assessment will start tomorrow!

Pumpkin Patch Field trip

Our field trip to Greendale Acres pumpkin patch is confirmed for September 29th from 11:30-1:30. Field trip forms went home this afternoon in the pocket of the students’ Planners. Please fill in the form and send it back with the children. Parents are welcome to join us at the farm for no extra cost. Any siblings that are 3 and older will pay $12.50 at the farm.

Please stop at the office for a criminal records form if you have not yet done that! If you fill one out as a Kindie parent it is still good for this year!
